China Travel – Sites of Red Palace and Red Square of Haifeng

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

The Sites of Red Palace and Red Square are located at Haicheng Town, Haifeng County, Guangdong Province.

The Honggong was originally the Confucian Temple of Haifeng County. The main body Dacheng Hall is a double-eave brick-timber structure of five bays in length, with a gable and hip roof. In October 1927, Comrade Peng Pai led the third Farmers’ Armed Uprising in Haifeng County, and conquered the county. From November 18 to 21, the Congress of the Workers, Farmers and Soldiers in Haifeng was held in the Dacheng Hall in the Confucian Temple, on which eight creeds were adopted such as Plan of the Land Confiscation, etc. Also, a committee of the soviet government was elected via voting. The people in Haifeng County celebrated the founding of the soviet government, which was the first soviet regime in the countryside. The circumference of the meeting place was painted red, and the interior walls were covered with red cloth. Thus the Confucian Temple was renamed Red Palace.

The Red Square used to be the governmental granary in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and was called Dongcangfu at that time. It is adjacent to the Red Palace. On December 1, 1927, thousands of people congregated at the square to attend the Founding Ceremony of the Soviet Government, in which some comrades such as Peng Pai, delivered speeches. Peng Pai also inscribed the Chinese characters of Red Square. Later on, the Soviet Government named Dongcangfu to Hongchang (Red Square).
