       The city we’re going to

       visit today

is said to be a new coastal city

at the foot of a mountain with fresh

       air and beautiful scenery.

       It is called…

       It is called Zhuhai.

       Audience friends,

       we’re pleased to see you

       again on schedule.

       Starting from today,

       we’ll go sightseeing and learn

       in this beautiful city.

       Yes, we’ll learn as we

       see around here.

       Then where should we start?

       How about getting to know

       Zhuhai’s image ambassador first?

       Image ambassador? Do you

       refer to …

It’s right here, the Statue of

       Fisher Girl.

I didn’t see it quite clearly

       from a distance.

It is actually a statue standing

       on the sea.

       Yes. The Zhuhai Fisher Girl

has been China’s first large statue

       standing on the sea.

       Ever since it was sculpted

       in 1982,

       it has become a symbol

       of Zhuhai.

       Han Jia, “wenshi”?

       What did it ask?

       You mixed up two homonyms.

I mean the “shi” as in “shijie”.

       “Wenshi” is a verb,

       which means to be published

       or come out.

We can say a new product

       都可以说是“问世”;

       has come out;

       比如说,一本新书即将问世。

a new book has been published.

So “wenshi” means to be published,

       or come out.

Besides, there is a beautiful story

       about the Fisher Girl.

       Tell us quickly.

       The story goes that long,

       long ago,

       the daughter of Dragon King

       was infatuated by the beautiful

       scenery at Xianglu Bay.

So she came down to the world

       disguised as a fisher girl.

       She lived and worked with

       local people.

       As time went by,

she fell in love with an honest

       young fisherman, called Haipeng.

       On their wedding day,

the Fisher Girl gathered a huge pearl,

which was the largest in the world.

       Thus holding high this pearl,

she gave it as a gift to

       the Elder Jiuzhouhuan.

This is the story of the Fisher Girl

       who gave away her pearl.

       Wow, it’s so beautiful!

       Yes, indeed.

       This highway along the coast

is 15 kilometers in total length.

It not only has beautiful scenery,

but also a very nice-sounding name.

       Han Jia,

I found the Chinese word “hao”

       is used pretty often and

       when used differently, its meaning

       is also different.

How should we understand the “hao”

       as in “haoting”?

       Let me explain.

Here, “hao” placed before a verb

       means fine or satisfactory

       in that respect.

       For examples, nice-sounding,

       good-looking, delicious.

       So “haoting” means nice-sounding,

       “haochi” means delicious,

       and “haokan” means good-looking.

       Just as we said,

Tā  hái  yǒu  yíge  hěn  hǎo  tīng  de  míngzi

It also has a very nice-sounding name.

       What is its name then?

       Qinglǚ Lu, Lovers’ Road.

       Lovers’ Road?

Oh, no wonder I saw some

statues of lovers on the roadside.

       Maybe in a moment,

we’ll really come across a number

       of couples of lovers.

       It’s very likely.

Those who come to this road

       are not just lovers.

       All those who are attracted

       by Zhuhai’s

       beautiful scenery and romance

would come here for a look.

       In fact, Zhuhai not only

       has an excellent living environment

       and romantic coastal scenery,

       but also a very important

       geological position

as it links Macau by land

       and Hong Kong by sea.

Yuanyuan, this is the busy Gongbei Port

       with ships traveling busily

between Zhuhai and the Hong Kong

       and Macau regions.

       Since Zhuhai borders on Macau,

       the opposite side must be

       Macau, right?

       Yes. The Gongbei Port

       connecting with Macau

has a history of more than

       100 years.

I didn’t know the port has such

       a long history.

       Sure.

       It has always played an

       important role

       in Zhuhai’s external exchange

       and contact.

       “Fahui” is a verb

that means to display or show inherent

       qualities or abilities, right?

       Right. “Fahui” is a verb

that means to display or show

       inherent qualities or abilities.

       Just we said,

Tā  yì  zhí  fāhuī  zhe  zhòngyào  de  zuòyòng

It has always played an important role.

       Actually, from the number of

       travelers here,

we can see the important role

Gongbei has played all the time.

       As we can see,

it’s a bustling scene on the square.

       What is the amount of

       passenger flow?

       Normally,

       the daily amount reaches 70,000.

       On holidays,

it can reach as many as 140,000.

       That’s quite a big number.

       Yes. Along with Zhuhai’s development,

the number will further increase steadily.

       And the Gongbei Port

will play an even bigger role.

Zhuhai is a well-known garden city

       with a beautiful environment, fast

       economic development,

an important location and convenient transport.

Its many unique sights also include

       its romantic seaside.

The graceful Statue of Fisher Girl overlooks

       the vast ocean.

The beach is an ideal habitat for

       many sea birds.

Zhuhai, like a pearl, shines ever brighter.

       Zhuhai, as a cosmopolitan city,

       attracts friends from all over

       the world.

       Here we are at

       Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong

       Baptist University

       United International College.

What a long name it is!

       Let’s simply use its abbreviated

       form UIC.

       This college

       advocates

       an educational theory with holistic

       education at the core.

It is quite new in China.

       Speaking of holistic education,

       I know something about it.

       This type of education

       helps students to have solid

       basic theories

while enabling them to be adapted

       to new technologies and

       new environments.

       Yes. Yuanyuan was right.

       Besides, we’ve got acquainted with

a number of new friends here.

They are teachers of this ollege.

       Through talking with them,

       we’ve got a deeper understanding

       of holistic education.

       Although these teachers come

       from different countries,

       when they talk about Zhuhai,

they’re all quite familiar with it.

       Well,

       after introducing these new friends,

now we’re going to set today’s

       award-winning question.

       Right. Here’s today’s award-

       winning question.

We hope you’ll stay tuned to us

       tomorrow at the same time

       And don’t forget our slogan.

Chinese Culture – Ruins of the Southern Gate of the Palace Wall of the Dragon City in the Sanyan period of the Sixteen States at Chaoyang in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

Period: Sixteen States Period (304-439)
Listed in: 2004
Excavated by: the Cultural Relics and Archeological Research Institute of Liaoning Province
Archeological team leader: Tian Likun

  Site description

The site was first discovered in 2003. More than 10,000 square meters was excavated from July 2003 to December 2004, revealing a great number of cultural relics. The gate facing the south was initially built in the Former Yan (of the Sixteen Kingdoms Period) and sank into complete oblivion in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). It was then underwent construction and reconstruction in the six dynasties of the Former Yan, Later Northern Yan, Northern Wei (386-534), Tang (618-907) and Liao (916-1125) and Jin (1115-1234), covering over 1000 years.

This is an archeological finding rarely seen in the excavation of city ruins in China. The structure of the doorway is well preserved with a unique architectural style, which has provided archaeologists with substantial material for the study on city gate in north China in the Sixteen States Period.

  Significance

The search for Sanyan’s capital city is an important task of the archeological work of the Sixteen States Period. The unearthed city gate, located at the northern point of Beijing’s central axis, is concluded to be the south gate of the palatial Dragon City in the Sanyan period, which sheds light on the research on Dragon City’s planning.
