Soon after we got to Shunde,

       we truly realized that

it’s really a very nice place.

       we already got some idea

of the charms of Qinghui Garden, one

       of Guangdong’s four famous gardens.

       And today’s itinerary

       is more appealing to me

because it is all related to food.

       on this Happy Journey along

       the Coastline!

Hello there! I’m Merry Han Jia.

       And I’m Happy Yuanyuan.

       I’m pleased that together

       we’ll learn about

       Shunde’s gourmet food

       culture today.

       Oh, whenever gourmet food

       is mentioned,

       you can’t be happier.

       When food is mentioned,

       who isn’t happy?

       That’s true,

as the saying goes: “Food is the first

       necessity of the people.”

What? “Min yi shi wei tian”?

“Min yi shi wei tian” is a saying,

meaning food is the first necessity

       of the people.

So “min yi shi wei tian”

       literally means

       that people regard food as

       their heaven.

It’s used to express that food is the first

       necessity of the people.

       Now let’s review this saying.

   Mín  yǐ  shí  wéi  tiān

       Food is the first necessity

       of the people.

       Actually, speaking of Shunde’s

       gourmet food,

I must say its history goes

       back to ancient times.

It is a land flowing with milk and

       honey in the Lingnan region.

       It has abundant natural resources.

       Besides, Shunde residents’ culinary

tradition goes back to ancient times,

       thus gourmet food has been

       in vogue all the time.

       Currently,

       Daliang in central Shunde

       has been elected China’s first

       Gourmet Town.

       And here it is

       a very bustling commercial

       street in Daliang.

       Our gourmet food journey starts

       right here.

It sounds like you came here

       with a clear goal.

       Sure. I heard that

       on this street

       you can eat several well-

       known snacks.

       For example …

       For example, the stewed

       milk pudding!

       Eh, there it is.

       Yes.

       Yeah, very delicious!

       Yes. I’ve tasted stewed milk

       pudding of many places,

       but the milk pudding here

       is the most delicious.

       That’s for sure.

       Stewed milk pudding was invented

       in Shunde.

       So naturally its taste is

       most genuine.

       You’re remarkable!

       You even know this.

       You ought to know

       I’m determined to become

       a gourmet

so as to taste all the delicious

       food in the world.

       Being in Shunde,

it is certainly necessary for me

to know this little general knowledge.

       Yuanyuan just used the word

       “changshi”.

       “Changshi” is a noun,

       that means general knowledge.

       So “changshi” means general

       knowledge, or common sense.

       For example, general knowledge of

       science, common knowledge of life.

Then can you name some other

       famous snacks here?

If you can, I’ll treat you to

       them myself.

       Hey, it’s also common knowledge

       for me.

I won’t be stumped. Listen carefully.

       Also ginger yogurt, snake porridge,

       Lunjiao cake, Chencun vermicelli

       and fish-skin jiaozi.

       Oh, there are so many.

It’s true you do know quite a lot.

Okay, I’ll make good my promise

to take you to eat all

       Shunde snacks.

       That’s unnecessary.

       Unnecessary?

       You’re invited to eat snacks

       and you refuse to go?

You don’t know that I’m waiting

       to eat a full meal.

It would be unfair for me

       just to eat snacks.

       Oh, actually Yuanyuan harbors

       this wishful thinking.

       But he wasn’t wrong

because Shunde is one of the birthplaces

       of Guangdong cuisine.

       Now that we are here,

we should certainly get a feel for

       the charm of Guangdong cuisine.

       Normally Guangdong cuisine

       uses delicacies both from land

       and sea as the ingredients

       whereas Shunde cuisine

mostly uses local fresh-water live fish

       as the ingredient.

So it stands out as a unique part

       of Guangdong cuisine.

       Does “du shu yi zhi”

mean to put up a flag?

       That’s the literal interpretation.

“Du shu yi zhi” is an idiom,

which means to stake out one’s

       own course,

or to have a point of view

       or method

       that stands out as unique.

       So “du shu yi zhi”

       means to stake out one’s

       own course,

or to have a point of view

       or method

       that stands out as unique.

Just as we said just now,

Shùn  dé  cài  zài  yuè  cài  zhōng  dúshùyízhì

Shunde cuisine stands out as a unique part

       of Guangdong cuisine.

The acclaim won by Shunde cuisine

       should be attributed to

       Shunde chefs.

       Shunde produces famed chefs.

       I also heard about it.

       You also know this?

       Of course.

       Shunde is home to chefs

       as the saying goes:

       “The chefs of Guangdong

       cuisine are from Shunde.”

Is it that we’re going to visit a

       famous chef today?

       You’re right.

       That would make our gourmet

       food journey complete.

       Wow, the table is groaning!

Sure. These are all Shunde specialties.

They are cooked by the famous

       Chinese chef Luo Funan.

       Mr. Luo, please. Hello.

       Hello, Mr. Luo.

Just a look at these dishes

       you cooked

       and smelling them

       is appetizing enough.

       I’m flattered.

       Can you tell us

       how these dishes are cooked?

       The chef said that cooking

       these dishes

       requires coordinating the various tastes

and the full use of the ingredients

so as to made the dishes taste

       and look good.

       Today we had

a big feast for our eyes.

Yes. But a feast for the eyes

       isn’t good enough.

       I’m most interested in a

       feast for the mouth.

Sunde is one of the birthplaces of

       Guangdong cuisine.

Here gourmet food dates back to

       ancient times.

       Sunde food uses choicest ingredients

       and is cooked meticulously.

       Innovative and resourceful,

it stands out as a unique part of

       Guangdong cuisine.

Sunde is also home to chefs.

It has produced many famous chefs

       of Guangdong cuisine.

       Yuanyuan, you’re still eating.

       Oh, I’m coming.

       Set an award-winning question, right?

Rest assured. I’m prepared for it.

China Travel – Stone Inscriptions on Yaowang Mountain

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Yaowang Mountain is 2 km east of the county seat of Yaoxian County, Shanxi Province.

Yaowang Mountain was called “Panyu Mountain” in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It is 1,100 m above sea level and is formed by five peaks connecting one with another, so it was also called “Wutai Mountain” (Mountain of Five Peaks) from the Song (960-1279) to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The mountain is high but not dangerous, full of green pines and verdant cypresses, with towering ancient trees, being always a famous scenic spot in central China. Its naming of “Yaowang Mountain” has something to do with Sun Simiao, the famous medical scientist of the Tang Dynasty. Sun Simiao (581-682), born in Yaoxian County, was world famous because of his monumental works in medical science such as Qianjin Yaofang (Prescriptions Worth One Thousand Pieces of Gold), Qianjin Yifang (Supplement to Prescriptions Worth One Thousand Pieces of Gold), etc. He wrote thirty books (more than a million words) in his life, and was renowned as “Yaowang” (King of Medicines). Later generations built a Yaowang Temple on Panyu Mountain to commemorate him, hence the name of the mountain.

On Yaowang Mountain, you can find stone inscriptions everywhere, and they chiefly fall into such two categories: steles and stone caves. There are more than a hundred steles, and the most precious one is the group of five steles with Qianjin Yaofang inscribed on them, made in the sixth year (1572) of the Longqing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), which is valuable data for the study on traditional Chinese medicine. The stone caves were all chiseled during the period from the Tang to the Sui Dynasty (581-618), and the extant ones are 7, containing more than 40 Buddha statues. Moreover, among the chain of mountains are preserved 66 statue steles from the Northern Wei (386-534) to the Tang Dynasty, called “Stele Forest of the Medical World”. There is a well-preserved Yaowang Temple on the mountain, which was built in the 37th year (1558) of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, but kept the architectural styles of the Jin (1115-1234) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties.
