Chinese Conversation – lesson 183

Friday, August 29th, 2008

你是否曾抬头仰望夜空,思索着星星为什么会一闪一闪呢?事实上,星星本身并不能闪烁,感觉到星星在闪烁其实是一种幻觉,而这种幻觉是由于我们和星星之间的多层大气所造成的

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered why the stars twinkle? In fact, the stars themselves do not actually twinkle–the illusion is caused by the numerous layers of atmosphere between us and them.

Three humble shoemakers brainstorming will make a great statesman.

There are always ears on the other side of the wall.

There is no silver here: three hundred taels.

A tiger never returns to his prey he did not finish off.

Vicious as a tigeress can be, she never eats her own cubs.

Beijing Olympic – Shanghai metro to replace ads with public service messages

Friday, August 29th, 2008

The city’s metro system will phase out commercial messages in favor of public service announcements, Shentong Metro Co. Ltd., the railway operator, said on Wednesday.

“May the metro tell me”, a drive to solicit public opinion about metro messages, was launched to create a more favorable environment for the 2008 Olympics and 2010 World Expo.

Ye Tong, a manager of the company, said that the metro will offer an increasing amount of information about such public facilities as hospitals, schools, museums, and libraries. Commercials will eventually end entirely.

Ye said opinion collection would continue until May 28, with submission forms available online.

The metro system has 234 kilometers of track, with eight routes and 161 stations. It’s the busiest metro in China, with 3.7 million daily riders. Plans call for an expansion to 500 km and 8 million daily riders by 2010.
