Our destination today is the city

       Huizhou in Guangdong Province.

       Whenever I mention here,

       I have an indescribable sense

       of intimacy.

       That’s because a year ago,

       our film crew have already

       filmed here

       and founded a deep friendship

       with people place.

Han Jia, since this is a

       revisit for you,

       you must be very familiar

       with it.

       Of course.

       Although more than a year’s

       time has passed,

       I still remember clearly

       many of the mountains and

       rivers here.

Then it’s all up to you

       to arrange today’s itinerary.

      No problem. Just leave it

       all to me.

       “Bao zai ni shen shang”?

       What does that mean?

       “Bao” here is a verb,

       which means to undertake

       the whole thing,

       or assume responsibility for

       completing the whole task.

So the “bao” here is a verb

       that means to undertake

       the whole thing,

       or assume responsibility for

       completing the whole task.

       Oh, I see.

       Yeah. We often say in

       daily conversation,

       这事儿就包给我了;

       leave it all to me;

       这些活儿我全包了等等。

       I’ll undertake all these jobs.

       那我们现在就出发吧。

       Now let’s start off.

Okay. But where are we going?

       We’re going right there.

The National Sea Turtle Nature Reserve

is situated in the town Gangkou,

       Huidong County.

It is surrounded by hills on three sides

and faces the sea on the other.

       The environment is quiet.

Now it is already a member

       of the International Man and

       Biosphere Reserve Network

       and also one of

       China’s 21 major wetlands of

       international importance.

       Yuanyuan, what are you doing?

Do you need to ask me this?

       I’m looking for sea turtles.

       Perhaps I could come

       across a few

turtles getting ashore to lay eggs.

Although this place has been ideal

for sea turtles to lay eggs

       since ancient times,

       it is impossible for you

to see them at the present time.

       Why not?

       Sea turtles normally lay eggs

       at night.

How is it possible to see them

       lay eggs at daytime?

Besides, it won’t do either if you keep

walking back and forth like this.

As sea turtles are very alert,

       once they notice any activity

       on the beach,

they will return to the sea.

       You just said “dongjing”.

       Why both moving and stable?

       The “dongjing” I just said

       is a noun,

referring to movement or activity, or

the sound of movement or activity.

So “dongjing” refers to movement or activity,

or the sound of movement or activity.

       Just as we said

Yào  shi  fāxiàn  yǒu  dòngjing  hǎiguī  jiù  huì yóu  huí dàhǎi

If they notice any movement or activity,

the sea turtles will return to the sea.

To my surprise, I was happy

       for nothing!

I thought I could see sea turtles.

       This isn’t impossible.

Let me take you to a place,

where you can see sea turtles.

       The place Han Jia mentioned

       is actually

       this Sea Turtles Rescue Center.

Here, we not only saw many

       sea turtles,

       but also learned some knowledge

       about sea turtles

       from the staff here.

       Audience friends,

       although these little sea turtles

are leading a carefree life here,

       the fact is,

sea turtles are facing a very

       harsh predicament.

Yes. Just now we heard from

       the staff here that

       in recent years,

       due to over-catching

       and sea pollution,

       the living environment of

       sea turtles

       is seriously threatened.

       So the rescue and protection

       of sea turtles

       have increasingly become a

       common concern.

       But fortunately, people’s

       protection awareness

       has been constantly strengthened.

       Whenever people find injured

       or sick sea turtles,

they will promptly send them to

       the protected area for treatment.

       Han Jia, look over there.

       They are actually applying medicine

       to a little sea turtle.

       Excuse me, what’s wrong

       with this sea turtle?

       This sea turtle is sick,

       suffering from skin fester disease.

       Skin fester disease?

What kind of disease is it?

Skin fester disease is a kind

       of skin disease.

If a sea turtle gets infected

       with skin fester disease,

       any carelessness on our

       part will result

in its death from bacterial infection.

After these sea turtles fully recovered,

       will they be all released

       to the sea?

       Yes.

These sea turtles are here to

       receive medical treatment.

       After they have fully recovered,

if our staff don’t find anything abnormal,

       they’ll release them back

       to the sea.

Can we see any sea turtle being

       released today?

       Sure you can.

There is one to be released

       over there.

      Wow, really. That’s wonderful!

Arriving early is not as good as

       arriving at an opportune moment.

       What do you mean “zao”

       and “qiao” here?

“Lai de zao buru lai de qiao”

       is a saying.

       It means arriving early is

       not as good arriving

       at an opportune moment.

So “lai de zao buru lai de qiao”

       is a saying,

       which means that arriving early

is not as good as arriving

       at an opportune moment.

       It’s used to describe arriving

       at an opportune moment.

       The release of sea turtles

       can’t be seen every day.

       Today we happened to have

       such a chance.

       That’s why I said

Lái  de  zǎo  bù  rú  lái  de  qiǎo

Arriving early is not as good as arriving

       at an opportune moment.

In a moment, we’ll go to see

if we can be of any help for

       the staff here.

       Audience friends,

       how about going together

       with us?

       The Sea Turtle Nature Reserve

       lies in Huidong County.

       The 1,000-meter-long sand beach is

an ideal hatchery for sea turtles.

While the vast ocean is their home,

the beach is a safe haven for their offspring.

       Despite the problematic living environment,

they will fare well under human protection.

       That’s great.

The little sea turtle will soon return

to the embrace of the sea.

       Well, audience friends,

       please answer today’s award-

       winning question.

       Listen carefully.

       Here’s the question.

       our program,

       you would call on everyone

       around you

       to protect sea turtles

       and other kinds of wildlife.

They are the best friends of

       us humans.

       Yes.

But before we go, we still

       want to remind you

       not to forget our slogan.

       Bye for now.

Let’s go to take a look at

Chinese Conversation – lesson 170

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Jane: So how long have they been going without food?
Jack: A few haven’t eaten or drunk anything for a few days. The rest are taking turns not eating for twelve hours.
Jane: Huh? And they call that a hunger strike?
Jack: So people hunger striking in the States really don’t eat at all then?
Jane: Right. The idea is that they care about something so much, they’re willing to die for it.
Jack: That’s intense. I’m glad these students aren’t endangering themselves like that.
Jane: Me, too. You know, all this hunger strike talk is making me hungry. And here it comes!
