做了很多好事。

    and did many nice things.

    王渊源:“着想”这个词我懂。

    I understand the word “zhuoxiang”.

    就是指为某人或者是某事的利益考虑。

It means to consider, or take the interests of

    someone or something into consideration.

    韩佳: “着想”就是指

    ”Zhuoxiang” means

    为某人或者是某事的利益考虑。

to consider, or take in the interests of

    someone or something into consideration.

    比如说,为别人着想,

    For example, taking into consideration

    the interests of other people,

    为工作着想,为集体着想。

of work, or of a group.

    再比如我们刚才说的,

Another example just as we said,

Tā yìzhí wèi dāng dì de lǎo bǎixìng zháo xiǎng

    他 一直 为 当 地 的 老 百姓 着 想。

He always took the interests of the local

    people into consideration.

    渊源,你知道吗,

    Yuanyuan, do you know that

    很早以前啊,

    a long time ago,

    韩江里有凶猛的鳄鱼攻击人?

there were crocodiles in the Hanjiang

    River that attacked people?

    所以被人们称为鳄溪。

    So locals called it the

    Crocodile Stream.

    韩愈来到潮州的第一件事情

The first thing Han Yu did

    in Chaozhou

    就是派人把鳄鱼赶跑,

was to send people to drive

    away the crocodiles

保护了人们的安全。

so as to protect the safety

    of local people.

    所以当地人为了纪念他的功绩,

    To commemorate his achievements,

    就把这条江称为韩江。

    locals renamed this river

    the Hanjiang River.

    王渊源:原来韩江的名字是这么来的呀!

    Oh, that’s where the name

    of Hanjiang came from!

    韩佳: 对啊。

    Yes.

    韩愈对潮州的另外一项重要的贡献,

    Another important contribution

    Han Yu made to Chaozhou

    就是积极推动了

    was that he actively promoted

    当地教育事业的发展。

    the local educational development.

    王渊源:这一定对潮州后来的文化发展

    That must have played an

    important role

    起到了非常重要的作用呢。

    in Chaozhou’s later cultural development.

    韩佳: 说得没错儿。

    Exactly.

    潮州之所以能够成为一座人才辈出的城市,

    Chaozhou has produced so many

    talented people,

    和当年韩愈积极推行教育事业

to a great extent, due to

    Han Yu’s efforts

    是有很大关系的。

    to promote the local educational

    development.

    王渊源:难怪潮州人会建立这所祠堂呢!

    No wonder Chaozhou residents

    built this temple!

    韩佳: 对啊。你看,这些石碑啊、匾额

Yes. Look, all these stone tablets

    and plaques

    都是人们为了表达

were placed here as an expression

    对韩愈的崇敬之情而留下的。

    of the local people’s admiration

    and respect for Han Yu.

    旁白: 潮州的教育事业在韩愈的指导下

Under the guidance of Han Yu,

    education in Chaozhou

    走上了正轨。

was put on a right track.

    在之后的一千多年里,

    In the ensuing more than

    1,000 years,

    潮州涌现出了大批的人才。

Chaozhou has turned out a large

    number of talented people.

    而近代中国的国学大师饶宗颐,

    Sinology Master Rao Zongyi

    was one of those

    就是其中一位有着国际影响的人物。

    who enjoyed international renown

    in modern times.

    韩佳: 饶宗颐先生不光是一位国学大师,

Rao Zongyi was not just a sinologist,

    而且他对历史、考古、文学、

he was also very versed in

    history, archeology, literature,

    教育、翻译等等方面都有很深的研究。

    education and translation.

    王渊源:这么多门学问他都懂啊!

    He understood so many

    types of knowledge!

    韩佳: 不光是懂啊,

He did not just understand them,

    而且还很精通呢。

    he was also extremely

    knowledgeable in them.

    王渊源:精通?

    ”Jingtong”?

    韩佳: “精通”就是指对学问、技术或者是业务

    ”Jingtong” means to master,

    be proficient in,

    有很透彻的了解,并且熟练地掌握。

    or know thoroughly.

Wei: Where does jazz come from?
Trev: It’s a complicated story, but it started right here.
Wei: At this bar? You gotta be kidding!
Trev: I mean here in this city. There are many influences here. French, Spanish, Creole, African, American and Caribbean.
Wei: And you’ve saying all those people created jazz?
Trev: They all influenced it.
Wei: New Orleans is a true melting pot.
Trev: You’ve right. This is what the American Dream is all about.
