But why, I didn’t see those

    boats now.

    The reason is like this.

    Normally,

the middle section of the bridge is

    supported by 18 wooden boats,

    forming a floating bridge.

But when there is a flood

    in the river

    or when there are big

    passing vessels,

    these boats have to be

    moved away.

    This design is so innovative!

Han Jia, do the 24 pavilions

refer to those on the bridge?

    Yes, exactly.

    The Guangji Bridge has 24

    pavilions on it,

    which are all different in

    shape and style.

    Each has its strong points.

    ”Ge you qian jiu”?

”Ge you qian qiu” means that

each has its own strong points

or merits.

So “ge you qian qiu” means that

    each has its strong points.

    These pavilions can provide

    not only

    shelter from rain or wind

    for pedestrians,

    but also a nice space

    for businesspeople

    to set up shops here.

They can also set up shops

    on the bridge?

    Of course.

    In the past,

the Guangji Bridge was the only passage

    between eastern Guangdong

    and Fujian and Jiangxi.

    Therefore, it used to be

an important hub of goods distribution

    and transportation.

    The entire bridge was like

    a busy street market.

So locals used to call it

as the half-kilometer marketplace.

It seems the Guangji Bridge played

a very important role in the past.

Yes. Just because of its importance,

    local officials had two iron

    cows made

and put them at both ends

    of the bridge,

    hoping they would protect

    this bridge

    from the damage of floods.

    But later, a flood

washed away one of the iron cows.

    I see. That’s why

”Only of one of the two

    iron cows has remained.”

Chaozhou is a famous ancient city

    in eastern Guangdong.

People say a visit to Guangdong without

going to Chaozhou is a trip in vain.

    The imposing Guangji Bridge

    displays Chaozhou’s splendor

    in the past.

The bridge over the rolling Hanjiaing River

    has witnessed thousands of years

    of changes.

    We hope you’ll continue

    to be with us

    same time tomorrow to learn

    more about Chaozhou

    and to experience Chaozhou.

    Don’t forget the slogan.

Learn Chinese and make friends everywhere!
