    旁白: 离开厦门,

    Departing from Xiamen,

    我们的车队进入了福建的漳州。

    our vehicles entered Zhangzhou

    of Fujian.

    这里空气湿润、温度宜人,

With moist air and comfortable temperature,

    是个四季如春的好地方。

it’s a nice place with all

    seasons like spring.

    所以中国女子排球队的训练基地

For this reason, it was chosen as

the location of the training base

    也定在了这里。

    of China’s Women Volleyball Team.

    王渊源:快乐学汉语,万里海疆行!

Learn Chinese the fun way and enjoy

    a happy journey across China!

    大家好,我是快乐的王渊源。

    Hello, I’m Happy Wang Yuanyuan.

    韩佳: 我是快乐的韩佳。

    And I’m Merry Han Jia.

    王渊源:我们现在就是在福建的漳州市。

    We’re now in Zhangzhou City,

    Fujian Province.

    而我们身后呢,

    And behind us

    就是漳州市的标志性雕塑——

    is Zhangzhou’s symbolic sculpture,

    中国女排

the monument that was dedicated to

    the Chinese Women Volleyball Team,

    三连冠纪念碑。

    who won three championships

    in a row.

    韩佳: 没错儿。

    Exactly.

    这座碑

    This monument commemorates

    是纪念1981年到1984年,

    the three championships won

    in a row

    中国女排连续三次夺得了世界冠军。

    by the Chinese Women Volleyball

    Team from 1981 to 1984.

    王渊源:连续三次夺冠,

Champs for three times in a row,

    中国女排真是了不起!

    they were just remarkable!

    韩佳: 还有更了不起的事呢!

There were even more remarkable things!

    王渊源:是什么呀?

    What were they?

    韩佳: 在后来的1985年和1986年,

    Later in 1985 and 1986,

    中国女排又两次获得了世界冠军,

    the Chinese Women Volleyball

Team won two more world titles,

    也就是说中国女排实际上是

    which means they actually

    连续五次夺得了世界冠军。

    won five world championships

    in a row.

    那边不远处,

    Not far from here

    就是著名的中国女排腾飞馆了。

is the well-known Tengfei Museum dedicated

to these Chinese women volleyball players.

    在那里可以更多地了解中国女排。

    There you can better understand

    this team.

    渊源,这些就是当年的女排队员了。

    Yuanyuan, they are those women

    volleyball players.

    王渊源:很有精神的一支队伍啊!

    What an energetic team!

    韩佳: 嗯。当年正是因为她们的努力,

    Yes. They achieved great success

    才使中国获得了这么高的荣誉。

    precisely because they worked

    very hard.

    王渊源:正是?你为什么要在“是”前面

    ”Zheng shi”? Why did you

    add “zheng”

    加一个“正”呢?

    before “shi”?

    韩佳: 这个“正”是用来加强语气的,

    ”Zheng” is used for emphasis,

    表示对事物的真实性加以肯定。

    meaning precisely.

    王渊源:这个“正”是用来加强语气的。

So the “zheng” here is used

    for emphasis.

    用英语可以说“precisely”。

In English we might say “precisely”.

    韩佳: 那我们可以说,

    So we can say,

Tāmen zhèng yīnwéi hěn nǔlì suǒyǐ cái qǔdé le hǎo chéngjì

    她们 正 因为 很 努力,所以 才 取得 了 好 成绩。

    They achieved great success precisely

    because they worked very hard.

    王渊源:我想,除了努力之外,

I guess, apart from working hard,

    她们也应该有什么特殊的训练方法吧。

they must have had a very special

    training method.

    韩佳: 特殊的训练方法?

    A special training method?

    我可没听说过。

    I’ve never heard of it.

    不过,她们当年的训练场地

    But their training venue in

    those years

    倒是十分特别。

    was very special.

    王渊源:这是?

    What is this?

    韩佳: 这就是当年女排训练场地的模型啊。

This is a model of their former

    training venue.

    王渊源:这不就是个竹棚嘛!

It is just a bamboo shack!

    韩佳: 对啊。当时的女排

    Yes. Those women volleyball players

    就是从这竹棚里训练出来的。

were trained just from this kind

    of bamboo shack.

    王渊源:这不可能吧!

    It was impossible!

    她们的训练场地不应该是这样的吧。

    Their training venue shouldn’t

    have been like this.

    韩佳: 可是这就是事实啊。

    But this is a fact.

    那时候啊,

    At that time,

    中国的经济还不是很发达。

    China’s economy wasn’t quite developed.

    当时的训练基地

    The training base then

    只有五处排球训练场。

    had only five training courts.

    地面都是用泥土和黄沙铺成的。

    And those courts were covered

with a mixture of clay and sand.

    而运动员们住的是板房,

The players lived in plank houses,

    用的是井水,点的是蜡烛。

    drank well water and used

    candles for lighting.

    从住处到训练场地,

To get from their dorms to

    the training venue,

    必须要步行穿过一公里的乡村路呢。

they had to walk on foot along a

    one-kilometer-long country road.

    王渊源:没想到她们的训练条件那么艰苦啊!

    To my surprise, their training

    conditions were so harsh!

    韩佳: 是啊。

    Yes.

    尽管当时的训练条件十分艰苦,

    Despite their harsh training conditions,

    但是女排队员们仍然是顽强拼搏

    these women volleyball players tenaciously

    进行训练。

    persisted in training.

    她们当时的一句口号就是:

    Their slogan then was:

    “宁愿磨掉九层皮,滚得一身泥,

    ”No bruises and tumbles can

    也要练出好成绩!”

    thwart our determination to

    get high scores!”

    就是凭着这样的精神,

It was this kind of spirit

    that inspired

    她们才取得了这么好的成绩。

them to achieve so many successes.

    王渊源:看来中国女排

It seems it was not fortuitous for the

    Chinese Women Volleyball Team

    能成为冠军不是偶然的。

    to become world champions.

    她们的那种拼搏精神

    Their spirit of struggle

    比什么特殊训练方法和场地都有效。

was more effective than any training

    method or facilities.

    韩佳: “拼搏”是个动词,

    ”Pinbo” is a verb,

    就是指使出全部力量来争取。

    which means to struggle.

    王渊源:“拼搏”指使出全部力量来争取。

    So “pinbo” means to struggle.

Tāmen de pīnbó jīngshen zhídé wǒmen xuéxí

她们 的 拼搏 精神 值得 我们 学习。

We can learn from their spirit of struggle.

    旁白: 对于女排队员们来说,

    For China’s Women Volleyball Team,

    过去的训练条件已经和现在不能比了。

    the current training facilities are

incomparable to that of the past.

    精心设计的训练场馆,

    The meticulously designed training gym

    还有舒适的公寓,

    and the comfortable apartments

    所有的这一切,

are all available in order to

    都是为了使女排队员们

    help these sportswomen

    能够更好地进行训练,

    train more effectively

    在未来的比赛中取得优异的成绩。

    and achieve better results in

    future competitions.

    王渊源:韩佳,你看,还有人在训练呢!

Han Jia, look, there are people

    training here!

    韩佳: 对啊。

    Yes.

    这是漳州市少体校的队员们在训练。

They are students of the Zhangzhou

    Junior Sport School training here.

    王渊源:你们好!

    Hello!

    队员: 嗨,你们好!

    Hi, hello!

    王渊源:你们打得太好了!

    You played so well!

    韩佳: 是啊。看你们年纪都不大。好像…

Yes. You all look so young.

    你多大了呀?

    How old are you?

    队员: 我十三岁。

    I’m 13.

    韩佳: 十三岁啊?

    13?

    那你是从什么时候开始打排球的呀?

When did you start playing volleyball?

    队员: 我九岁的时候就开始打了。

    I started playing it when

    I was nine.

    韩佳: 九岁就开始打了。

    You started playing volleyball

    at the age of nine.

    王渊源:有没有想不想做了的时候?

Did you ever think of giving up?

    韩佳: 对,有没有打退堂鼓?

    Right, did you ever think

    of quitting?

    队员: 不会啊。

    No, never.

    我认为我们的生活现在过得很充实。

I think we live quite contentedly.

    韩佳: 那肯定会有一个很好的目标

    You must have a goal

    在激励自己吧?

    that encourages you, right?

    队员: 嗯。我觉得我以后想上一个

Yes. I think I’d like to study

    好一点的体育学院。

    in a better institute of

    physical education.

    然后,现在先学好排球。

    At present, I should learn

    volleyball skills.

    到那时候的话,

    When that time arrives,

    出来当一名教练或老师,

I want to be a coach or

    a teacher

    可以把排球传授给更多人。

so that I can impart my volleyball

    skills to more people.

    王渊源:真是太好了。谢谢你们。

    That’s great. Thank you all.

    韩佳: 谢谢,谢谢!

    Many thanks!

    那你们继续训练吧。

    Go on with your training.

    不影响你们了。

    We don’t want to bother

    you anymore.

    队员: 拜拜。

    Bye-bye.

    王渊源:拜拜。

    Bye-bye.

    韩佳: 看她们训练时的场景,

    Seeing how they trained,

    还真有点儿当年中国女排的架式。

I found they did have the demeanor of

    the Chinese Women Volleyball Team.

    王渊源:“架式”就是指身体呈现的样子。

    ”Jiashi” means demeanor or manner.

    韩佳: “架式”是个名词,

    ”Jiashi” is a noun,

    就是指身体呈现的样子。

    which means demeanor or manner.

    王渊源:对了,我得赶紧准备了。

Oh yeah, I’ve got to make

    some preparation.

    韩佳: 你要干吗?

    What for?

    王渊源:当然我要跟她们切磋切磋!

I want to have a try with them!

    韩佳: 啊?你行吗?

Really? Are you up to it?

    王渊源:不试试怎么知道呢。

You’ll never know without a try.

    韩佳: 那我们就来看看今天的赏心悦目吧。

    Let’s watch today’s Feast for

    the Eyes.

    赏心悦目:

    漳州位于福建的最南端

    Zhangzhou lies on the southernmost

    coast of Fujian Province.

    整洁的市容 舒适的气候

It has clean and tidy streets and

    a comfortable climate.

    使这里成为了中国女排的训练基地

The training base of the Chinese Women

Volleyball Team is located right here.

    中国女排腾飞馆

    The Tengfei Museum

    记录了中国女排的光荣历史

records the glorious history of the Chinese

    Women Volleyball Team,

    以及五连冠的辉煌战绩

    who won three world championships

    in succession.

    现代化的设施和场馆

    The modern gymnasium here

    为运动员的训练提供了良好保障

    has excellent training facilities.

    一代又一代女排队员在这里挥洒汗水

Generations of China’s women volleyball players

    在通往胜利的道路上谱写新的篇章

    have trained here before attending

    world competitions.

    韩佳: 渊源,感觉怎么样啊?

    Yuanyuan, what’s your feeling?

    王渊源:挺好挺好的。

    Pretty good.

    你没看见,刚才我那扣球?

    Did you see my spike?

    那叫一个精彩啊!

    That was wonderful!

    韩佳: 停停停。

    Stop. Stop.

    我刚才可全都看见了。

I saw all of it just now.

    王渊源:你都看见了?

    You saw all of it?

    韩佳: 嗯。

    Yes.

    王渊源:好了,我们节目的最后

Well, at the end of the program,

    还是要提醒您,

we’d still want to remind you

    别忘了明天继续收看我们的节目。

not to forget to continue to watch our

program tomorrow at the same time.

    韩佳: 当然了也别忘了我们的口号。

And also don’t forget our slogan.

    合: 学说中国话,朋友遍天下!

Learn Chinese and make friends everywhere!

    韩佳: 明天见。

    See you tomorrow.

耐:的确是。我们是为了我们的健康而战。
莫理:关于这件事我可以访问你跟其它人吗?我是说在我们玩完后。
巴耐:当然。我们希望越多人知道越好。
莫理:嘿,刚刚跳出水面的是什么?
巴耐:那是条飞鱼。
莫理:哇。又一条!我从不知道它们可以飞这么远。
巴耐:小时候,我们都坐木船出海去抓它们

Banai: It was. We’re fighting for our health.
Morley: Can I interview you and some other people about this? After we have some fun, that is.
Banai: Sure. We want as many people to know about it as possible.
Morley: Hey, what was that jumping out of the water?
Banai: That was a flying fish.
Morley: Wow. There’s another one! I never realized they could fly so far.
Banai: When I was a child, we used to take wooden boats out to catch them.

Cri – Lesson 20

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Yajie: Perfect Chinese your way, in only five minutes a day. Welcome to Chinese Studio. I’m Yajie.
Cam: Hi, everyone, I’m Cam.  Yajie, have you bought a present yet for Louis?  It’s his birthday tomorrow.
Yajie: No, not yet!
Cam: I got him something… but I need to learn how to say Happy Birthday in Chinese when I see him tomorrow.
Yajie:  I’ll teach you.  Today we can learn some expression of congratulations when somebody is celebrating a birthday.  Let’s check Key Words of the Day.
************Key words of the day
Today we’ll expressions of congratulating someone when he/she is celebrating a birthday. 祝你生日快乐!Happy Birthday! 祝你生活幸福美满!祝你身体健康! All in today’s Chinese Studio.
***********
Cam: In English we say happy birthday when attending a birthday party. How to say this in Chinese?
Yajie: We say  “祝你生日快乐!”
Cam: 祝你生日快乐!
Yajie: Right. “祝你生日快乐!”  Is how we would wish somebody a happy birthday. 祝你 is used to express good wishes, sometimes with the implication of “congratulating in advance”. 祝,  zhù, the forth tone. It means offering good wishes. 你, means you. 祝你 together means I wish you….
Cam: 祝你 (zhù nǐ).
Yajie: 生日 is birthday. 生, shēng, the first tone. 生, to give birth to.
Cam: 生 (shēng). 日 (rì), we learned it during last week. It means the day, the forth tone. 日(rì). And 星期日(Xīngqī rì) is Sunday.
Yajie: Absolutely right! Well, Cam, you have a sound memory.
Cam: Xie xie.
Yajie: 快乐 means happy. 快, k-u-a-i, kuài, the fourth tone. 乐, l-e, lè, also the fourth tone. Together it’s快乐(kuài lè).
Cam: 快乐(kuài lè). 我很快乐 (wǒ hěn kuài lè)。I’m very happy. 你快乐吗?(nǐ kuài lèma?)
Yajie: 我也很快乐 (wǒ yě hěn kuài lè)。I’m happy too.

Yajie: Cam, how do you think you would respond if somebody said zhu ni sheng ri kuai le?
Cam: Could I say:  xie xie?
Yajie: Yes, that’s right.  Sometimes people just say 生日快乐 for short.
Cam: Ok, this sounds reasonable, because  祝你 means wishing you….  In English, we say Happy Birthday for short instead of Happy Birthday to you.  When wishing somebody a happy birthday, it’s not necessary to specify the person.  So it’s the same as Chinese.  There is no need to say祝你(zhù nǐ).
Yajie: You got it. Besides生日快乐, there are other relevant expressions. For example, you can say祝你身体健康 which means “I wish you good health”  身体is body. 身, s-h-e-n, shēn, the first tone; 体, t-i, tǐ, the third tone.
Cam: 身体, shēn tǐ.
Yajie: And 健康 means fine, or healthy. 健, jiàn, the forth tone; 康, k-a-ng-, kāng, the first tone.
Cam: 健康 (jiànkāng).
Yajie: Together you can say祝你身体健康(zhù nǐ shēntǐ jiànkāng).
Cam: 祝你身体健康(zhù nǐ shēntǐ jiànkāng).

**********Key words reminder
Today we’ve learned three different expressions to wish someone a happy birthday 祝你生日快乐!Happy Birthday! 祝你身体健康!I wish you good health!
***********
Yajie: If an senior person is having a birthday, you could say:  祝您健康长寿!
Cam: 祝您健康长寿!(zhù nín jiànkāng chángshòu!)
Yajie: Yes, 长寿 means longevity. I wish you good health and a long life. 祝您健康长寿!You can say this to your grandparents!
Cam: 祝您健康长寿!(zhù nín jiànkāng chángshòu!)  You can also say this if somebody is not having a party, right?
Yajie: Yes, very good!  Well, class is over for this time. Don’t forget you can win a gift by answering the question of the day in Chinese: what will you say to a Chinese friend on his/her birthday?
Cam: You can send us questions or comments to Chinese@crifm.com.  That’s Chinese@crifm.com.  Or you can visit us on our website at en.chinabroadcast.cn. Click learn Chinese, where you can enjoy other free Chinese-learning programs.
Yajie: Well class is over. 再见!
Cam: 再见!
