In the last few days while

  we are in Taizhou,

  we’ve not only watched some

  fascinating natural scenery,

  but also explored the age-old

  cultural city.

  And today, we’re going to

  take a look together

  at Taizhou’s superb carving craftsmanship.

  This wood carving is beautiful!

  Don’t talk so loudly.

  This isn’t wooden carving.

  It’s called Fanhuang bamboo carving.

  Fanhuang bamboo carving?

  Yes.

Look, it’s a kind of carving

  which is

  done on bamboo without the

  green covering.

  Such kind of bamboo carving

  is called Fanghuang bamboo carving.

  The craft is very complicated.

  Oh, how complicated is it?

Oh, “duo” here is an adverb

  that is used in questions

to ask the amount or extent

  of something.

  ”Duo” is an adverb

  used in questions

  about the amount or extent

  of something.

  For example, we often ask

how tall, how old, how far,

  how large and so on.

Tā de zhìzuò gōngyì yǒu duō fùzá

  How complicated is the craft?

  Before carving is started,

the green outer covering of the bamboo

  has to be peeled off.

  Then the material undergoes boiling,

  drying, pressing and scraping.

  The processed bamboo strips

  will then be glued together

or inlaid into a wooden or

  bamboo base.

There is so much preparatory work

  before carving really starts!

  Yes.

  Thus bamboo carvings crafted

  this way

can be as exquisite as an

  ivory carving

in terms of color and luster.

  Oh yeah,

I heard there is a showroom here

  displaying many bamboo carvings.

  Should we go there and

  have a look?

  Oh, it’s a good idea.

  These various bamboo carvings

  and Mr. Luo Qisong,

  the famous chinese craftsman’s

  superb carving craftsmanship

  have really broadened our

  horizons today.

It is said that this kind of carving

  already has a history of

  more than 100 years.

  It is also prized as

  one of Taizhou’s three famous

  kinds of carvings.

  Three famous kinds of carvings

  of Taizhou?

  They are stone carving, bamboo

  carving and glass carving.

  ”Bo diao”

  refers to glass carving, right?

  Glass carving is Taizhou’s

  best known carving craftsmanship.

  That art museum

  was founded by Taizhou’s

  master glass carver

  Wu Zixiong.

You just used the “shi … de” structure.

  Is it a fixed structure?

  Yes, exactly.

This structure is used for emphasis.

Zhè zuò yìshuguǎn shì wú xiānsheng chuàngjiàn de

  This art museum was established

  by Mr. Wu.

  In the museum,

can we see many of his works?

  That’s for sure.

  We’d better go in now.

  Perhaps,

We may see Mr. Wu in there.

  There are so many glass

  carvings here!

  Yes. They say there are

  over 3,000 pieces.

And each is an exquisite masterpiece.

Glass is both fragile and hard.

But they can carve it into such

  beautiful works of art.

  It is really amazing!

  Yes. It requires the carvers

to know the properties of glass

  and master all kinds of

  carving skills.

  All kinds of carving skills?

  Yes.

  To produce different artistic effects,

the artist has to master various

  carving skills.

Take the work, Girl and Chrysanthemums,

  for example.

The artist used the frosting, the

  light condensing and refracting

  and many other carving techniques

before he was able to vividly depict

  the beauty of the chrysanthemums

  and the girl.

Wow, with just a cutting knife

  and a piece of glass,

the artist can create such beautiful

  works of art!

I think it is really not easy!

  Wait a minute.

Who said the cutting tool is a

  cutting knife?

  What is it?

  Oh, you mean

  the wheel-like thing

is the carving tool for glass?

Yes. It’s called the grinding wheel.

The grinding wheel serves as brush

  and the glass as paper,

which is the most unique aspect

  of glass carving.

Eh, you just said the grinding

  wheel serves as brush

  and the glass as paper.

  How do we understand the

  word “yi”?

Oh, the “yi” here is a preposition,

meaning to use or take as.

So “yi” here means to use

  or take as.

  Well, do you want to

  have a try?

Me, am I up to it?

  Of course, you are.

  Okay.

I’ll take this for a try.

  Good, good.

  Could I break the glass?

  Should not be.

Is there anything I can help

  you with?

  Master Wu, it’s so good

  you’re here.

We can barely use this thing.

Can you give us a demonstration

  while you explain it?

  Let me tell you.

  Sit down, please.

  You just carved two lines.

I can add some sea waves to

  the lines.

  Sea waves.

  Sea waves.

  This grinding wheel

functions as the Chinese painting brush.

  It can carve out whatever

  you want.

  It can vividly depict the

  most wonderful

  and the colorful things.

  Look, he carved two lines.

I can carve some sea waves

  and five seagulls.

  The seagulls are flying above.

How about a sun as well?

  Good. You demonstrate to us.

  To tell you the truth,

  I didn’t expect that.

  You can’t touch it here.

  After Mr. Wu’s explanation,

  I’m sure our audience

  has got a deeper understanding

  of glass carving.

  I suggest

we take a look at today’s Feast

  for the Eyes

  Well, we have to wait

  still a bit

before the master finishes his work.
