  After crossing the beautiful

  Jiaojiang Bridge,

  we entered the city area

  of Taizhou.

Look, it’s a city with wide streets,

  a tidy green belt

  and high-rise buildings.

  Instantly we were deeply impressed

  by the dynamic

  and modern coastal city Taizhou.

  And enjoy a Happy Journey

  across China!

  Hello there!

  I’m Merry Han Jia.

  And I’m Happy Yuanyuan.

Today we’re going to take you

to Taizhou to know about it.

  Let’s go.

  To know about Taizhou,

we have to start from this

  waterfront park.

  Oh, why?

  Because here it has Taizhou’s

  nine counties

and a full map of Taizhou.

  You must be kidding.

It is such a small park.

It is impossible for it to contain

  nine counties.

I just said “keneng” means possible.

  Yeah. “Keneng” is an adjective.

  It means possible or likely

  to be true.

Tā rènwéi zhè jiànshi shì bù kěnéng de

He thinks that it is impossible.

  Don’t jump to conclusions.

  Let me tell you why.

  The nine-arch bridge we just

  walked along

  symbolizes Taizhou’s nine counties,

  each representing a county.

  Oh, I see.

  I didn’t expect that.

  Then what about the map

  of Taizhou

  you just mentioned?

It is right this man-made lake.

  When seen from high above,

it resembles the map of Taizhou.

  I see.

Taizhou is a both old and new city.

It is old because it has a very

  long history.

  It is new because

because it became a city only

  Let’s walk through some of

  its streets and alleys

to find out its past and present.

  We’ve arrived at Taizhou’s

  old Haimen Street.

I see lots of shops here.

Was it also a commercial street

  in the past?

  Yes. This street was built

  in the Qing Dynasty.

After Haimen Port was open to

  the outside,

  this place gradually began

  to flourish.

  Yeah. “Zhujian” means gradually.

  比如说,影响逐渐扩大;

  For example, the influence

  gradually increased;

  the undertaking has gradually developed.

Gǎngkǒu duì wài kāifàng zhī hòu zhèli jiù zhújiàn fánhuá qǐlai le

After the port was open to the outside,

this place gradually began to flourish.

Although it is not as flourishing

as it was in the past,

we can still see many of

  the structures

that were built during the late

  Qing Dynasty.

  Walking here

  and seeing these old-style houses

makes us feel as if we’ve

  returned to the past.

  Although this old street is

  not long,

  we can still see many

  old-brand shops,

  antique shops and tea houses.

  Walking along this street,

It seems we can still see

  the old image of Taizhou.

  Having got some basic understanding

  of Taizhou’s history,

now we’re going to take a look

at the city’s future development plans.

  Yuanyuan, look,

this is a floor model of Taizhou’s

  overall development plan.

What it shows is the future

  of Taizhou.

You mean Taizhou in the future

  will look like this?

  Yes. Look,

those are the three districts of Jiaojiang,

  Luqiao and Huangyan.

  Originally,

  they were not jurisdictionally

  part of Taizhou.

But under the overall development plan,

  they have become new districts

  of the city.

Why did they decide to do so?

They did so to facilitate unified

  protection, management

and development of the green heart.

Look, that part is the green heart.

  Green heart?

  Yes. In that area,

  there are many types of

  ecological environment,

  which have been preserved intact.

  Until today,

there has been no large-scale development

  activity ever conducted there.

  So many places there have

  remained intact.

What kind of role will it play

  in the future?

  Taizhou authorities

plan to make it the core of

  urban development,

protect it and make the best

  use of it

so as to create an environment where

  man and nature coexist harmoniously.

  ”Hexie” means harmonious, right?

  Right. “Hexie” is an adjective.

  It means harmonious.

  Oh, now I see.

  Through overall planning,

  Taizhou actually wants to make

a better use of its resources

and build itself into an ecological city.

  Right?

  Yeah, you can think so.

It’s a pity our time is limited.

  Otherwise, I would like to

  find out more.

  Oh, this isn’t impossible.

Eh, tell me what your method.

Of course to take a look

  at our today’s Feast for

  the Eyes.

  Taizhou is a coastal city

  where tradition mingles with modernity.

Strolling along this old street brings to life

  the past of Taizhou.

The old houses invoke the city’s former prosperity.

  Proud of their historical tradition,

people of Taizhou are striving forward for

an affluent and harmonious life in the new era.

  After watching Taizhou’s

  beautiful scenery,

  now we ought to set

  today’s award-winning question

  for you.

  Yes. Listen carefully.

  Here’s today’s question.

Yeah. Our program is about to

  end here.

  We’re wondering if we have

  brought any fun to you.

  If you have any thoughts

  or suggestions,

feel free to give us a call

or let us know in writing.

  And of course, don’t forget

  our slogan.

  See you tomorrow.

China Travel – Putuo Zongsheng Temple

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

The Putuo Zongsheng Temple is located among mountains to the north of the Mountain Resort of Chengde City in Hebei Province.

The Putuo Zongsheng Temple, built in the latter period of the reign of Emperor Qianlong, is one of the famous Eight Outer Temples in Chengde City, Hebei Province. In the 35th year (1770) of Emperor Qianlong’ reign, in order to celebrate his 60th birthday and his mother’s 80th birthday of the following year, the Putuo Zongsheng Temple was set up to receive princes, dukes and the nobility from all the ethics who would come to Chengde to attend the birthday celebration.

The Putuo Zongsheng Temple is the Chinese transliteration for a Tibetan word Potala. It was constructed according to then Potala Palace, which was the center of Chinese Lamaism. Therefore, it is also called the Little Potala Palace. The Putuo Zongsheng Temple, occupying 22 hectares and with more than 40 halls, is the biggest temple among the Eight Outer Temples.

The principal building of the temple is a 25-meter-high red platform with a white stone base of 17 meters high and each side measuring 60 meters. In the center of the platform is the Wanfa Guiyi Hall. Multiple eaves stretch to the summit of the hall. Above are gold-plated steel tiles in the shape of fish scale. On the ridges of the hall stand rows of beasts kissing each other.

After the hall was completed, every time when Emperor Qianlong went on an inspection tour to Chengde, he was bound to worship Buddha here. Around the platform there are also the Luojia Shengjing Hall, the Quanheng Sanjie Pavilion, and the Cihang Pudu Hall, etc. All of them feature steep multiple eaves and gold-plated tiles, forming a solemn and grand complex together with the red platform.
