After leaving Wenzhou,

we continued southward

before arriving at our today’s

destination, Ruian.

I heard this city has not only

a flourishing economy,

but also a very long history,

and of course, as well as rich

tourist resources.

Learn Chinese the fun way and enjoy

a Happy Journey across China!

Hello there! I’m Happy Yuanyuan.

Today I came to Ruian here

by plane.

Hey, you’re pretending perfectly!

Audience friends,

don’t be cheated by Yuanyuan,

this airplane is actually a cafe!

Han Jia just said “qishi”

means actually.

Yes. “Qishi” means actually,

or in fact.

Don’t forget today we’re also

going to visit Yuhai Hall

of Ruian.

We mustn’t forget that.

Just rest assured.

I remember that.

Let’s go.

Yuhai Hall of Ruian

is a private library.

It was built in 1888

by Sun Yirang, a renowned scholar

in Ruian,

and his father Sun Yiyan.

Since ancient time, this

private library

has attracted numerous readers

due to the great amount of

books it keeps.

Yuhai Hall is also very famous

in Zhejiang.

The words “yu hai”

means the books here

are as valuable as jade

and the amount of books is a big

as the boundless sea.

Wow, what a nice metaphor!

I have to go and see the books

for myself.

Oh, forget it.

Why?

I remember Tianyi Pavilion

in Ningbo

is also a private library.

It wasn’t easily accessible

to anybody.

I suppose Yuhai Hall would

be the same.

You’re wrong.

Allowing visitors to enter it

and borrow books

is the greatest characteristic

of Yuhai Hall.

But this practice

is rarely observed at many

other ancient Chinese private libraries.

Really? That’s great!

I have long wanted to visit

a private library.

I’m just about to have my

wish fulfilled.

You used the word perfectly.

“Ru yuan yi chang”

means to have one’s wish fulfilled.

So “ru yuan yi chang” means to

have one’s wish fulfilled.

Like what you have just said.

Wǒ mǎshàng jiù kěyi rúyuànyǐcháng le

I’m just about to have my wish fulfilled.

Let’s go quickly.

Sun Yirang built Yuhai Hall

just for the purpose of disseminating

knowledge to benefit his folks.

So all those who love reading

can come here.

This is really good.

The more the readers, the bigger

the role

these books will play.

You can’t touch them

so carelessly.

Why not?

You can borrow books at

Yuhai Hall,

but you have to obey their rules.

It is not allowed just to take

a book

as you please like this.

First, you have to wash your

hands clean.

Then,

make sure you are dressed clean

and tidy.

When you browse certain rare books,

you ought to wear gloves.

The rules here are so strict.

When Yuhai Hall was built,

they set up 16 rules,

which all readers

must strictly observe.

One of the most important rules

is that you cannot take any

book away.

Which means you can read

only here.

You can’t take a book home.

Yes. The purpose of this rule

is to better protect these books.

In the past, Yuhai Hall

also had a special printing room.

Usually,

they printed some books

and gave them free to

those readers

who could not afford to

buy books.

They even thought of other

people’s difficulties.

They were so thoughtful.

Do you think you should

explain to us

the meaning of “zhoudao”?

“Zhoudao” can mean thorough,

thoughtful or considerate.

Let’s explain with an example.

Tā kǎolv de shífēn zhōudao

He thought things over very thoroughly.

Sun Yirang not only built

his Yuhaia Hall with his

own resources.

but also opened its doors

to all those

who loved reading.

His deeds are really admirable.

Here is the former residence

of Sun Yirang.

Now it has become a memorial hall,

which gives a detailed account of

Sun Yirang’s lifetime achievements.

I would have a good look here.

Sun Yirang was not only

knowledgeable and versatile,

he also had many scholastic works.

In his later years,

he actively involved himself

in public undertakings and set up

industrial and commercial enterprises.

He was involved in founding

as many

as more than 300 schools.

It seems Sun Yirang

did contribute greatly to society.

Sure.

In the next segment,

let us take you

into Yuhai Hall and take a

look up close

at Sun Yirang in the Feast

for the Eyes.

The Yuhai Hall is a famous library in Rui’an.

It was founded by Sun Yirang, a noted

scholar of the late Qing Dynasty.

Yuhai means as precious as jade and

as vast as the sea.

The hall keeps large numbers of books.

This private library is unusual

because it is accessible to ordinary readers.

The owner’s selfless spirit deserves admiration.

It was this spirit that made it the number-one

private library in China.

Yuanyuan,

what do you think after seeing

Yuhai Hall and Sun Yirang’s residence?

I think, if possible,

I will also set up a private library

of my own

and also let it open to

the public free.

I even thought of a name

for it.

I’ll just call it Yuanyuan Hall.

It’s a nice name!

I wish you an early completion

of your library!

Thanks. Thanks.

Okay. Coming up next,

it’s today’s award-winning question.

Yes. Here’s today’s question.

Don’t forget to continue to

be with us

tomorrow at the same time

for the Happy Journey across China.

And of course,

also don’t forget our slogan.

See you again tomorrow.
