  Our today’s destination

is the city of Cixi, near Ningbo.

It is one of the rapidly rising cities

in the Yangtze River Delta area.

  With a history stretching back

  over 1,200 years,

it is home to Celadon Culture.

  The place we’re heading to

  is Shanglin Lake.

  There is an open-air celadon

  museum nearby.

  Han Jia, we’ve been walking

  for a long time.

  But why haven’t we reached

  the museum yet?

  It’s right here!

  The open-air celadon museum

  I just said

  actually refers to the Shanglin

  Lake area.

  Han Jia just said “yidai”

means region, district or the area

  around a particular place.

  ”Yidai” refers to

a particular place or the area

  around it.

Why do people call this area

  a museum?

  That’s because people believe

  the Shanglin Lake area

  is the birthplace of China’s

  celadon ware.

  Ruins of more than

  120 Yue kilns have been

  discovered here.

  Look, you can still see

  many shards

  scattered all over the area.

  So people call this place

  the Open-Air Celadon Museum.

  How long is the porcelain-making

  history here?

It is said as early as the

  Eastern Han Dynasty,

  celadon ware was already

  made here.

What a long kiln it was then!

I saw this kind of kiln in

  Jingdezhen.

  It’s called the dragon kiln.

  Such dragon kilns were

  very common in the area.

  With so many kilns,

this area must have been an important

  producer of celadon ware.

That’s right. The Shanglin Lake area

  produced the best celadon ware

in the whole country at the time.

  ”Shou qu yi zhi”?

  Stick out your fingers?

No. “Shou qu yi zhi” is an idiom.

  ”Shou” means first or best.

”Qu” means to bend or lower.

  Just imagine when we count,

we normally bend the thumb first.

And a thumb also means to

  be top-notch.

  So “shou qu yi zhi”

  means to head a list,

  or to be top-notch.

”Shou qu yi zhi” means to head

a list, or to be top-notch.

Zhèli chǎn de qīngcí dāngshí zài quán guó shǒuqūyìzhǐ

The celadon ware produced here was the

best in the whole country at the time.

As the place produced an ever

  increasing amount of porcelain ware,

  large quantities of such products

  were sold to

  over 20 countries and regions

  in Asia and Africa,

  thus

  opening the famous Maritime

  Silk Road.

  Where can we see

  the celadon ware produced here?

I think there must be some

  in the museum.

Let’s go there for a look.

  Okay.

  Han Jia,

are these all porcelain objects unearthed

  in the Shanglin Lake area?

  Yes.

Some of them are olive-green porcelain.

  Olive-green porcelain?

  What’s that?

  Olive-green porcelain is the

  best of Yue celadon.

It’s a kind of fine porcelain glazed

  in light green.

  And each such porcelain object

  looks crystalline.

  Let me find out.

  Um huh.

I think this one is olive-green

  porcelain, right?

  You found the right one.

  Through these porcelain objects,

  we got an even deeper

  understanding of

  the long history of Cixi

  Celadon Culture.

The only pity is that we

  can no longer

  see those kilns located all

  over the area.

  Nevertheless, we can still

  take a witness trip

  to witness

  an extremely huge construction project.

  Han Jia,

  you used “haoda” to describe

  the project.

  Is it an adjective?

Yes, it is. “Haoda” means huge

  or vast,

used to describe a project or

  a scale.

So we can say a huge project,

  a vast scale.

  ”Haoda” means huge or vast.

Nà shi yí xiàng fēicháng hàodà de gōngchéng

  That is a huge project.

  What exactly is the project

  you said?

  It is the Hangzhou Bay

  Sea-crossing Bridge!

  Didn’t we already see it?

  Yes.

When we were last in Jiaxing,

we only got some brief understanding

  of the bridge.

  I’m sure we’ll learn a lot more

  about it this time.

  The Hangzhou Bay Sea-crossing Bridge

  is 36 kilometers in length.

It is the longest sea-crossing bridge

  in existence or under construction

  in the world.

Does it have any unique features?

  It has two significant features.

  Han Jia was right.

  At the sea-crossing bridge

  exhibition hall,

  I got a deeper understanding

  of this bridge.

  In designing this sea-crossing bridge,

the scenic design concept was adopted

  for the first time.

The bridge was designed to be

  in an “S” shape.

It is not only esthetic, but also

  very practical.

The “S” design can reduce the impact

  of sea waves

  and also help drivers alleviate

  the visual

  tiredness of driving along

  a straight route,

  therefore guaranteeing traffic safety.

  I heard

this bridge has another unique characteristic.

Is it that it has an offshore platform?

Yes. And we made a model

  of this offshore platform here.

The two of you can take a

  look at it.

The offshore platform has three functions.

One is to function as an offshore

  rescue platform.

  二是作为一个服务区;

  Another is to function as

  a service area;

And third is to function as

  an observation deck.

It has a sightseeing tower on it,

  136 meters in height.

  Speaking of sightseeing,

I suggest we should get on to

the bridge for a closer look.

  If you are also interested,

  let’s go together.

The Shanglin Lake area was the birthplace and

one of China’s major producers of celadon-ware.

The craftsmanship existed for over 1100 years

from the Eastern Han Dynasty till

  the Northern Song Dynasty.

Today, there are still more than 120 sites

  of Yue kilns.

Porcelain shards are scattered all over

  the area.

It deserves to be called the Open-air

  Celadon Museum.

The celadon-ware produced here is known

for its crystalline and jade-like glaze.

Such products were also sold overseas.

The Hangzhou Bay embraces a vast area

  of the East China Sea.

  A magnificent, long bridge straddles

over the bay in a north-south direction.

  Audience friends,

  we’re presently standing

on the Hangzhou Bay Sea-crossing Bridge.

  This huge bridge

  is still being constructed around

  the clock.

  Staff here told us

so far, 15 kilometers of the Ningbo

  section has been completed.

  It seems

  the project progresses pretty quickly.

  Yes, it does.

  Here, our

  witness trip

  has come to an end.

Yuanyuan, take out what we’ve got

and show it to our audience now.

  It’s right this,

  the Bridge Witnessing Certificate.

  Every visitor,

  who has witnessed the construction

  of the bridge,

will get a certificate like this.

Han Jia, today in Cixi we

  witnessed the construction of

  the bridge

and paid a visit to the site

  of Yue kilns.

I think it was a most rewarding trip.

  Since you are so impressed

  by the trip,

  why not hurry and set

  today’s award-winning question

  for our audience?

  No problem.

  Here’s today’s award-winning question.

It’s time again for our program

  to end.

  Don’t forget to continue

  to watch our program same

  time tomorrow.

And also don’t forget our slogan.

  See you tomorrow.
