Cir – Lesson 120

Monday, April 28th, 2008

M: Dàjiā hǎo. Huānyíng nǐmen dào Xiànzài Xué Hànyǔ. Wǒ shì ManLi.

S: Wǒ shì Stuart. Our suspense story continues.

M: Remember, the bird thinks the bread is tasty hǎochī.

S: The cat thinks the bird is hǎochī. And, Chapter 3 begins:

M: Those two large dogs reckon the cat is very amusing, fun to play with 好玩儿 hao3 wanr2.

S: Suddenly, the cat jumped.

M: At the same time, the little bird flew off.

S: And then??

M: Patience. Wait for chapter 4. Now we look at the new stuff.

S: Remember from the previous lesson – nàkuài miànbāo hǎochī, 好吃 good to eat hǎochī. Well, the two big dogs thought,

M: nà zhī māo hǎo wánr. WAN wán ‘to play’, as in play a game, not play a piano. The wán changes to wánr in hǎo wánr.

S: So what does 好玩儿 mean? Duìle. Good to play, amusing, fun.

M: 那只猫好玩儿 that cat looks like fun nà zhī māo hǎowánr.

S: And I said突然,那只猫跳起来了!

M: tūrán, nà zhī māo tiào qǐlái le. 突然 TU RAN tū rán, 1st tone, 2nd, means  ‘sudden’, ‘suddenly’ tūrán.

S: So try to say, Suddenly, they came. Méi cuò.

It’s too sudden. Nà tài tūrán le.

S: Back to our māo, and 跳起来了

M: tiào qǐ lái le. 跳 TIAO tiào, ‘to jump, leap’ tiào. 跳起来 qǐlái QI LAI qǐlái, means ‘to get up’ or ‘rise’. It can be used to say, What time do you get up? Say it, nǐ jǐdiǎn qǐlái?

S: What does qǐlái do after a verb? Listen, and you’ll get the idea. 哭 kū, is ‘to cry’. He burst out crying, 他哭起来了 say it, tā kū qǐlái le.

M: 想 xiǎng, ‘to think’. Oh, I’ve thought of it! ò, wǒ xiǎng qǐ láile!

S: So what does 跳起来了 mean? Duìle. Jumped up, leapt. Nà zhī māo tiào qǐlái le.

M: And I said, TONG SHI tóngshí, ‘at the same time’, tóngshí.

FEI fēi, ‘to fly’, like in flying machine, airplane, 飞机 fēiji.

M: So what does 同时, 那只小鸟飞起来了 mean? Méi cuò. At the same time, that little bird flew up.

S: So, it seems our little bird is ok. But what about the cat?

S: To end, here’s chapter 3 again:

M: 那两只大狗认为那只猫很好玩儿。

S: 突然,那只猫跳起来了。

M: 同时,那只小鸟飞起来了。

S: And then?

M: Wait for Chapter 4. After our fùxí kè. Zàijiàn.

S: Zàijiàn!

Chinese Conversation – lesson 60

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Although fish do not produce sound the same way that humans do, they are by no means silent. When scientists brought listening devices down under the sea, they heard a large collection of whistles, beeps, and grunts. Poets who spoke of the silence under the seas did not realize that the underwater world is quite noisy.
