  ”Keyan Scenic Area”.

  This name sounds like something

  which definitely has something

  to do with stones.

  All the way here,

we’ve seen a lot of queer stones.

  I wonder

  what kind of surprise Keyan

  would bring us.

  I surely know

  the stones here must be

  worth seeing.

  Look,

does this stone look very special?

  Yuanyuan, our program has started.

What are you still doing here?

  I’m sorry.

  Soon after I got here,

I was attracted by this stone.

You certainly found the right place.

This is the famous Cloud-Bone Stone

  in the Keyan Scenic Area.

  Its shape is very odd,

  with a thick top and

  a thin base.

  How was the Cloud-Bone

  Stone formed?

  You may doubt it’s true.

  But the Clou-Bone Stone was

  artificially formed.

  Artificially formed?

  How could it be possible?

  Let me explain it slowly.

  There is a mountain here

  called Keshan Mountain.

  It has abundant rock resources.

  Since ancient times,

there has been a quarry here.

  This Cloud-Bone Stone

is the remaining part of the rock

  excavated from here.

Right. Did you say it has a

thick top and a thin base?

  Yes, I did. Why?

This shape is also the stone’s

  most striking feature.

From a distance, it looks like

  a billow of smoke.

  So people also call it

”Lu Zhu Qing Yan” – Smoke

  from the Stove.

It’s obviously a very apt name.

  But this huge stone

  appears a bit too solitary.

  Yuanyuan said “gulingling”

  to mean solitary, all alone

  or forlorn.

  ”Gulingling” means solitary,

  all alone

  or forlorn.

Zhè kuai shítou gūlingling di lì zai zhèli

This rock stands here all alone.

In fact, this rock isn’t solitary.

Look, there is a stone Buddha

  over there.

It was also left of the stone

  quarried from here.

  And it was later sculpted

  as it is now.

  This is the Tiangong Buddha

  I just mentioned.

  I’ve seen many Buddha statues.

  But this one doesn’t look

  any special.

This big Buddha is quite old,

  with a history going back

  over 1,600 years.

  Its biggest characteristic is …

  I know.

  This big Buddha stands

  in water.

  The biggest characteristic of

  this Buddha

  is its sculpture technique.

Look, the back part of the Buddha is

separated from the main rock mass.

  Only its base is connected

  with it.

It was carved using the hanging

  sculpting technique.

  The big Buddha

  has a very interesting part.

  What is it?

Its two ears are open to

  each other.

  If a child gets

  into one ear,

he can get out from the other.

  Isn’t it just the Chinese

  common saying,

”It goes in one ear and

  out the other”?

You reacted so quickly this time.

  ”Zuoer jin, youer chu”

  means someone pays

  little attention

  to what he hears.

  ”Zuoer jin, youer chu” means

it goes in one ear and

  out the other.

  The Cloud-Bone Stone and

  the stone Buddha

  are surely unique sights.

  All of a sudden, Yuanyuan

  became fascinated with them.

  Had I not said

  there was also the famous

  Jianhu Lake to see,

  he wouldn’t have left here

  so quickly.

Jianhu Lake is an artificial lake

dug in the Eastern Han Dynasty

  for irrigation purposes.

It’s said in its early years,

it covered an area of nearly

  200 square km.

  Shaoxing became a

  ”land and fish and rice”

  significantly because of

  Jianhu Lake.

  You said

  Jianhu Lake covered nearly

  200 square kilometers.

  But it doesn’t seem that

  big now.

  That’s because after such

  a long time,

many of the lake areas have been

  reclaimed into paddy fields.

And Jianhu Lake was also divided

  into various small lakes.

  With all the small lakes

  put together,

  the current Jianhu Lake

  covers an area of about

  30 square kilometers.

It’s a pity that the big

  Jianhu Lake

  has become so small.

  But fortunately, this part

  has been preserved very well.

  Otherwise,

  we wouldn’t have seen today’s

  beautiful Jianhu Lake.

  ”Xingkui” means fortunately

  or luckily.

  Fortunately it’s been protected, otherwise

there wouldn’t be this beautiful scenery.

  Since ancient times,

  many men of letters

  have visited Jianhu Lake,

  leaving poems in praise

  of the lake.

  Really?

I also seem to be inspired.

  Do you want to listen?

  Look, we’re almost reaching

  Huluzui Island over there.

  Let’s get on the bank.

  This group sculpture is interesting.

Why did they put these soldiers

  by the lakeside?

  This sculpture depicts

  wine-drinking soldiers.

  Wine-drinking?

  This group sculpture is titled

  Reveling Soldiers.

Look, the man over there is

  Yue King Gou Jian.

He poured wine into Jianhu Lake

and shared it with his soldiers

  just to boost their morale.

  And sure enough, during the

  war afterwards,

  the Yue troops’ morale was

  enhanced remarkably

and in the end they won

  the war.

  It seems that this generous

  act by the Yue King

  was surely effective.

  Perhaps, that wine

  still remains in Jianhu Lake.

  That’s why Shaoxing wine made

  with water of Jianhu Lake

  tastes so good.

Well, this isn’t the reason why

  Jianhu Lake water is used

  to make wine.

  The water of Jianhu Lake

  is very clear

  and contains minerals and microbes,

  which are conducive to

  wine brewing.

  That’s why Jianhu Lake water

is one of the ingredients of

  Shaoxing wine.

  It seems I should

take a few bottles of Jianhu

  Lake water back to Beijing.

  Why?

  We already understood Shaoxing

  wine’s brewing technique.

I want to see if I can also

  make some rice wine with

  the Jianhu Lake water

  when we get back.

  Okay.

  Then I’ll take our audience

  to watch

  today’s Feast for the Eyes.

The Keyan Scenic Area lies in

  western Shaosing.

  The imposing Cloud-Bone Stone and

  the centuries-old Big Buddha

are all parts of the centuries-old stone culture.

The misty Jianhu Lake is vast.

Water rushes through narrow rock gaps.

The long bridge presents a picturesque landscape.

The ripples depict an idyllic beauty.

  Well, today’s program

  is about to end here.

I wonder if you have really

  gained something.

  But I gained a lot.

  I’ve got several bottles of

  Jianhu Lake water.

They are all in the car.

  Then would you please

  set today’s

  award-winning question?

  Okay. Here’s today’s question.

At the end of the program,

  we’d like to remind

  you not to forget, same

  time tomorrow,

to continue to be with us

for the Happy Journey across China.

And also don’t forget our slogan.

Chinese Conversation – lesson 52

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

What happens to a man who does not sleep? Peter Tripp decided to find out. He went without sleep for 200 hours. After 30 hours he found that his eyes began to play tricks on him. Chairs seemed to move by themselves. The floor looked like it, too, was moving. After about 100 hours Tripp could not do simple things. He could not remember the alphabet. After 150 hours he had trouble remembering his name. After 200 hours he went to sleep. When he woke up, he felt fine.

Cri – Lesson 112

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

M: Dàjiā hǎo. Huānyíng nǐmen dào Xiànzài Xué Hànyǔ. Wǒ shì ML.

S: Wǒ shì Stuart. Last lesson, shàng yí kè, 我去买啤酒和矿泉水 beer and mineral water. Wǒ qù mǎi píjiǔ hé kuàngquánshuǐ.

M: I said. I’ll stay here, 我留在这儿wǒ liú zài zhèr.

S: In the shop I calmly said, Sùliào dài, plastic bag, sùliàodài? No way! 不行 bùxíng. It’s ‘white pollution’! 那是白色污染,báisè wūrǎn, I’ll use – ‘use’, remember, is 用YONG yòng – I’ll use my own bag. Then, I paid the money and left, 然后,我付了钱就走了 ránhòu, wǒ fù le qián jiù zǒu le.

M: Then, he came back 然后,他回来了 ránhòu, tā huí lái le.

S: 啤酒和矿泉水,I’ve bought everything 我都买完了 wǒ dōu mǎiwánle.

S: 天啊!I’ve lost my wallet.

M: Not again!

M: His wallet’s lost, 丢了 diūle. Who cares! Let’s look at the new stuff. Stuart went to the shop, I said ‘我留在这儿. I’ll stay here. 留 LIU liú, here means ‘to stay’ ‘remain’. I’ll stay here.

S: Now, bicycle, remember , is 自行车 zìxíngchē. So everybody try to say, You stay beside the bike.

M: Hěn hǎo.

S: I went to the store, or shop, shāngdiàn.

M: Then he came back 然后,他回来了 ránhòu, tā huí lái le.

M: Wǒde qiánbāo diū le. 丢 DIU diū, ‘to lose’ or ‘be missing’. Wǒde qiánbāo diūle. My wallet’s missing.

S: So try to say, My bicycle’s missing.

M: Fēicháng hǎo. Sometimes it means my bike’s been stolen.

S: And we’ll finish with a short dialogue. Repeat everything.

M: What a way to end the lesson! Zài jiàn.

S: Zàijiàn!
