  Somebody has written a poem

  describing Shaoxing.

  One of the lines is

  ”Many famous bridges come

  from this Yue city.”

  The description is surely true.

  In Shaoxing, we can

  see ancient bridges everywhere.

  These old bridges

  arouse great curiosity in Yuanyuan.

  I have long heard Shaoxing’s

  bridge are not only plentiful,

  but different in style.

  Do you think we can

see all the bridges here today?

You want to see all of Shaoxing’s

  bridges in a single day?

  Yeah. Is that possible?

  It’s absolutely impossible.

  You’d better be a bit

  more realistic.

  Shaoxing has more than

  10,000 bridges.

It’s billed as a City of

  10,000 Bridges.

  Even if in a year,

  you could hardly see all

  the bridges,

much less in a single day.

  More than 10,000?

I really want to see them all.

You said I should be a bit

  more realistic.

  What does that mean?

The “xianshi” I said is a verb.

It means to be realistic in

  speech or action.

  ”Xianshi” here means

  to be realistic.

  But it doesn’t matter.

Although we can’t see all of

  Shaoxing’s bridges,

we can still choose a few

  typical ones to see.

  There is even a bridge

  supported by boats.

Yes. It’s called the floating bridge,

  though a bit old-fashioned.

  That’s interesting.

  This kind of bridge

was built according to textual records.

It is said such bridges first

  appeared during

  the Spring and Autumn and

  Warring States period.

  Though called a floating bridge,

I find it really firm when

  I step on it.

  It’s not only firm,

but also very easy to build.

  Look, just link all the

  boats together

and cover them with wooden planks.

Such a bridge can be built

  both quickly and easily.

  Speaking of such a kind

  of bridge,

it is actually the forefather of

  other types of bridges.

  Hearing what you said,

I should really take a walk

  on it.

  Let’s go.

  Yuanyuan, look, this is

  also a bridge.

Why is it so narrow and

  so long?

  Let me ask you.

  Do you know what

  ”la qian” means?

  ”La qian”? Yes, I do.

  When a boat encounters shallow

  water or a weak wind,

  the boat will slow down.

Then there’ll be people on the

bank towing the boat with ropes.

  Exactly.

  That bridge was built just

  for those

  boat towing people.

So it’s called the Qiandao Bridge.

  Oh, I see.

  It’s such a long bridge.

  The boat-towers have to

  walk a long distance.

This bridge is just part of an

  ancient boat-tower bridge.

  The entire bridge is more

  than 100 km long.

  There are several sections

  similar to this one.

This bridge must have a very

  long history, right?

This bridge was built in the

  Tang Dynasty,

with a history going back more

  than 1,000 years.

  There are really very few

  such ancient boat-tower bridges.

  ”Quzhi ke shu” that means

  like count them on one

  hand, right?

Right. “Quzhi ke shu” means a

  small number,

  which can be counted on

  one hand.

This is the first time I have

ever seen this type of bridge.

  Shaoxing has a lot more

  peculiar bridges.

  Just take your time to

  see them.

What bridge shall we see next?

Next, we’ll see the most special

  Bazi Bridge.

  Bazi Bridge?

  Yes. As the bridge looks

people gave this name to it.

It does look like the character.

  When was this bridge built?

  This bridge was built in

  the Song Dynasty.

As for its most striking feature …

What is it? Tell us quickly.

We’ll find out after we get

  on the bridge.

  Look, she always keeps

  people guessing.

  Well, Yuanyuan, did you

  it find out?

  Wait, wait. One, two, three.

One, two, three. Now I know.

  This bridge spans three rivers

  and connects three streets.

  Yes.

  This is the biggest feature

  of the Bazi Bridge.

  This kind of design is

  really rare.

  Yes.

Several rivers and streets meet here,

  so the bridge was designed

  this way.

  Then whichever direction People

  going in

they can cross the rivers without

  a problem.

  Traffic is quite convenient here.

  Although it’s an ancient bridge,

it serves like a modern-day overpass.

  That’s true.

In the eyes of modern people,

  this bridge does show signs

  of modern overpasses.

  ”Yingzi” means trace, sign

  or vague impression.

  ”Yingzi” means trace, sign

  or vague impression.

Wǒmen néng cóng zhè zuò gǔqiáo shang kàn dao lìjiāoqiáo de

  yǐngzi

We can see signs of modern overpasses

  in this ancient bridge.

  From the floating bridge, the

  boat-tower bridge

  and the Bazi Bridge,

  I seem to have witnessed

  the history of

  the development of Shaoxing bridges.

I heard from Han Jia that,

in addition to their long history,

  these bridges attract visitors

  also because of the stories

  behind them.

  The Yishan Bridge?

But it doesn’t look like a fan.

  No, it doesn’t.

  But the bridge is known

  for a fan-related story.

  Please tell us the story.

  Okay.

  It is said that

an old lady was selling fans

  under this bridge.

  Her family was very poor

  and her business wasn’t good.

  Her story was learned

  by great calligrapher

  Wang Xizhi, who lived nearby.

  He was very sympathetic

  with this old lady.

Then, he gave a sum of money

  to the woman?

  No.

He wrote a few characters on the

  fans the woman was selling.

  Why did he do so?

Wang Xizhi told the old lady that

as long as she told customers it

was he who wrote the characters,

  people would definitely come to

  buy her fans.

  This old lady

did what Wang Xizhi told her

  to do.

And sure enough, a lot of people

  came to buy her fans.

All her fans were sold out.

  This story is quite interesting.

It seems there is a story behind

  every bridge in Shaoxing.

  That’s for sure.

  Coming up next,

let us take you to get a glimpse

of the charms of the ancient bridges

  in Shaoxing.

Shaoxing is also home to bridges.

  All kinds of

They not only make life convenient,

  Strolling along these old bridges

can better understand the leisurely way

of life of this waterfront town.

  There are so many bridges

  in Shaoxing.

But I never feel I have

  seen enough.

  That doesn’t matter.

  You haven’t seen enough

  this time.

  You can continue to see

  them next time.

  Well, I have no choice.
