It was still early morning
when we set off again
for China’s third largest island,
Chongming Island.
We got there first by boat
and then by bus.
We took so much hassle
just in order to take
a look at
this backyard garden of Shanghai,
known for its unspoiled
ecological environment.
I certainly expect it
to be another rewarding trip.
Learn Chinese the fun way and enjoy
a Happy Journey across China!
I’m Merry Han Jia.
And I’m Happy Yuanyuan.
We’re saying hello to you on
Chongming Island.
Chongming Island
has a long history
of more than one thousand and
three hundreds years.
A history of over one thousand years!
That’s a very long history!
Yes. Look, Yuanyuan,
over there is the Yangtze River.
最初,
At first,
Chongming Island was part of the shallow
sea area at the mouth of the Yangtze.
But by the Tang Dynasty,
due to the sedimentation
of silt from the Yangtze River,
it gradually rose above water.
And thus,
people set up a town here
called Chongming.
That is to say
the name Chongming
has only existed since the
Tang Dynasty?
Yes.
Later, due to the constant washing
of the river water,
Chongming Island changed
its location all the time.
By the Ming Dynasty,
Chongming Island has basically
stabilized at the current location.
How big is this island?
Chongming Island
is considered the third
largest island of China.
Currently
the island’s total area is
1,411 square km.
But the Yangtze River
constantly brings silt to it,
so its land area increases
some 20,000 mu
(about 1,400 hectares) each year.
It seems the formation of
Chongming Island
was quite similar to that of
the city Dongying
that we visited.
Yes. Yuanyuan just said “kan lai”
to mean it
seems or it looks as if.
”Kan lai” means
it seems or it looks as if.
Kànlái tāmen de xíngchéng guòchéng hěn xiāngsì
It seems that they were formed
in similar ways.
The formation and evolution
of Chongming Island
have been directly related
to the Yangtze River.
This alluvial island
lies right in the center of
the Yangtze’s mouth.
It naturally divides the river into
the north and south branches.
Audience friends,
right now we are
at the westernmost tip of
Chongming Island.
It is from here that
the Yangtze River
is divided into two parts.
Yes. As the waterway
on this side
is a lot wider than the one
on the other side,
most big cargo and cruise ships
get into the sea from here.
Maybe because of the existence
of Chongming Island,
the mouth of the Yangtze River
is quite similar
to that of the Yellow River.
Due to the sedimentation of silt,
vast wetlands have been formed,
giving rise to the growth
of reeds and other wild plants.
Yuanyuan, here is the Xisha Wetlands.
It is a stretch of
unspoiled shallows.
What does “bense” mean?
”Bense” means true or inherent qualities.
”Bense” means true or inherent qualities.
That means
this stretch of wetlands has
remained intact.
Yes. Naturally,
it has become a haven
for migrant birds
and many other species of wildlife.
Look, there are also many
little crabs over here.
Yes indeed. Seeing them
reminds me of a place,
which has a lot more crabs
than the place here.
Really? Where is that place?
Let’s go over there now.
Okay.
In fact,
I also heard from locals that
there is a pilot crab cultivation base
on this island.
They say the baby crabs
cultivated from here
have been adopted to
over 30 lakes in more than
ten Chinese provinces.
Such as the Dazha Crabs from
lakes of Yangcheng and Taihu
all come from here.
Yangcheng Lake’s Dazha Crabs
are very famous!
Everybody knows such crabs
are very delicious.
Yuanyuan just said “dingding
you ming”,
meaning very famous.
”Dingding you ming” means
very famous.
Dǐngdǐngyǒumíng de dàzháxiè jiù chūzi yú zhèli
The famous Dazha Crabs come from here.
Han Jia, there are so many
baby crabs here,
why should they be moved and
raised elsewhere?
Why shouldn’t they be kept here?
It sounds reasonable.
But these are all small crabs.
We can’t see big crabs.
Let’s go ask someone
responsible here.
Look, it seems they are netting
baby crabs there.
Yes, indeed.
Really a lot of them!
Excuse me,
since there are so many
baby crabs here,
why do you move them
to other places to raise?
Why don’t you let them
grow up here?
During the breeding season,
crabs require saltwater.
But during their growth period,
they need freshwater.
So the crabs are bred here
but kept and raised outside
the island.
Though they are called baby crabs,
they don’t look small at all!
And this one has already
grown up.
But when they were small,
160,000 of them weighed
only one kilo.
Can we still see the smaller ones?
No, no more.
You can see them in May
every year.
Just now I touched and
felt it.
Why is its shell so soft?
Because it is still in the process
of growth.
Crabs’ growth period
lasts one year and a half.
A crab has to shed its skin
17 or 19 times
before it becomes a fully-grown
commercial crab.
So many times!
Yes.
It’s really not an easy process.
Of course, not. Audience friends,
today we’ve really had
an eye-opening experience.
Now please join us
on the Feast for the Eyes
to get a glimpse of
the beautiful Chongming Island.
Chongming Island is China’s third largest island.
Its formation was related to the evolution
of the mouth of the Yangtze River.
Because of its unspoiled and quiet environment,
it is billed as Shanghai’s backyard garden.
The great quantities of silt constantly add
new land to the island.
The beautiful scenery and excellent
ecological environment
have made it a national-class ecological
demonstration area.
This pearl at the mouth of the Yangtze River
will shine even brighter.
Well, audience friends,
after the Feast for the Eyes,
it’s time again for the day’s
award-winning question.
Okay,
here’s today’s question.
We’ll be meeting you same
time tomorrow
still on Chongming Island.
Before we go, we’d still
remind you
not to forget our slogan.
What’s up?
